Katie Mallaber Artist Statement:                                                                            To me, water signifies life, reflection, and transformation. My functional pottery reflects water and movement, which allows the user of my vessels to pause for a moment through the serene moments in my aesthetics. Using a porcelain-like stoneware, I utilize the malleability of the clay to allow me to push and pull it to make the forms and undulations in my work, referencing fluidity. I pay close attention to the way my work will be held or gripped during my designing process. Surfaces of my forms are explored through slip application or through the surface of the glazes to appeal to a variety of people. I enhance the idea of fluidity in my work by using colors that are reminiscent of the ocean or a sunset. A seafoam green microcrystalline glaze may fall down the surface of one of the swells of my cup alluding to the idea of life and growth, while a fluid blue may run down the lip of the interior of a cup representing a reflection. The touch of my hand in the making process is what connects me to the user, and once in use, brings my work to life. Essentially, I strive for my work to create a stronger sense of presence for the user through the subtle connections to life within it.

Citizens with disabilities in Niagara County can question candidates in the November election

Independent Living of Niagara County (ILNC) is holding a FREE “Meet the Candidates” Day to enable Niagara County residents with disabilities — or anyone from the community — to hear and discuss issues with some on the ballot in the November General Election.  Our Advocacy and Public Policy Director Todd Vaarwerk points out that those who achieve local positions now may be the State and National leaders of tomorrow!  So, whatever your political views, this is your year to get involved!

The event is to take place on Wednesday October 25th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, in ILNC’s Conference Room at their 746 Portage Road office, in the Haeberle Plaza near Pine Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY.  We’ve invited those running for Niagara County Judge, Legislature and Family Court Judge; Niagara Falls City Council; City of Tonawanda Mayor and Aldermen; and City of Lockport Aldermen, who will address their constituents and take questions.

If an attendee wishes to be familiar with the “hot” disability issues, sheets of suggested questions will be provided; but participants are encouraged to ask about public concerns that are close to them.  The building is fully disability accessible.

Additional information is available by calling (716) 284-4131, extension 200.
