Subject: For Interested Volunteers
My name is Helen Charland and I am a PAVA advocate at Disability Rights New York in Albany. One of the focuses of the PAVA program is to ensure accessibility of polling sites. One of the ways DRNY works to ensure poll site accessibility is by conducting poll site surveying on Election Day. Poll site surveying is when trained volunteers assess poll sites for accessibility standards. Some examples of what poll site surveying consists of is measuring widths of doors, slopes of ramps, and making sure accessible voting machines are turned on (and much more). Trained volunteers are given a survey packet in which they fill out at each polling site they are assigned. The answers from the survey packet allow me to analyze the accessibility of poll sites in a given area.
This presidential primary, the PAVA program focused on surveying poll sites in the Capital Region. We are looking to expand our advocacy efforts to the Western NY area. If you are interested in becoming a trained poll site surveyor for the upcoming general presidential election on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, please contact me or Sophia Roberts, Supervising Coordinator at SANYS. My contact information can be found at the bottom of this e-mail. Sophia and I will be working together to organize the training of volunteers. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
I look forward to working with you all!
